1.契約商品系市場供不應求的短缺商品，進口商採用優惠的有競爭性的支付內方式，以求盡速容獲得商品以應市場的急需。
2.出口商資金短缺或資金周轉不靈，出口商要求採用預支信用證，但進口商可利用此機會以提供優惠的支付方式為理由，以求壓低價格。
3.進口商為搜索貨源，及時抓到貨源，故將預支信用證開至出口地的代理商或委託商，及時地靈活地抓住緊俏商品，以預支貨款的辦法與其對手予以競爭。

信用證方式有三個特點：
一是信用證是一項自足文件（self-sufficient instrument）。信用證不依附於買賣合同，銀行在審單時強調的是信用證與基礎貿易相分離的書面形式上的認證；
二是信用證方式是純單據業務（pure documentary transaction）。信用證是憑單付款，不以貨物為准。只要單據相符，開證行就應無條件付款；
三是開證銀行負首要付款責任（primary liabilities for payment）。信用證是一種銀行信用，它是銀行的一種擔保文件，開證銀行對支付有首要付款的責任。
