有時，序數詞可以用縮寫形式來表示。主要縮寫形式有：

其中1st，2nd，3rd為特殊形式，其它的都是阿拉伯數字後加th。

2、用法

序數詞在句中可作主語、賓語、定語和表語。

2.2 、合成。英語中有不少單詞可以合並而成為另一個單詞，合成又可分為完全合成和部分合成。

2.2.1 、完全合成。即由兩個或兩個以上的整體單詞構成。如：matchgirl（賣火柴的女孩），sleep-walk（夢游），face-to-face（面對面），commander-in-chief（總司令）

2.2.2 、部分合成。即由兩個單詞中一個單詞的前半部分與另一單詞的後半部分組合而成。如：motor + hotel－－ motel（汽車旅館）；television + broadcast－－telecast（電視播送）；smoke + fog－－smog（煙霧）； breakfast + lunch－－brunch（早中飯）。

有時，也有用兩個單詞中位置相同部分組合成一個單詞的，如：International Police－－Interpol（國際警察）；American Indian－－Amerind（美國印第安人）。

2.3、增減字母。即在一個單詞的前後增加或減少某個字母。如：Long（長的）－－along（沿著）；ward（病房）－－award（授與）；war（戰爭）－－warm（溫暖的）; pit（坑、穴）－－pity（憐憫）。

2.4、替換字母。即將一個單詞中的某個字母替換成另一個字母。如：rice（米、飯）－－rise（升起）；work（工作）－－word（單詞）；dip（蘸）－－kip（千磅）－－lip（嘴唇）－－tip（尖）－－zip（拉上／開……的拉鏈）

2.5 、形象化。即把一個單詞結構視為一個物體來記憶。如把單詞eye看作是一雙眼睛中間加上一隻鼻子，這樣就不易遺忘。

3、詞義記憶

詞義記憶就是按照單詞相同或不同的含義進行記憶，具體可分為以下幾種：

3.l 、同、近義詞。即按照同義和近義詞的分類來記憶單詞，如：美麗，漂亮beautiful－－pretty－－fair－－handsome；工資，報酬pay－－salary－－wage；醫生doctor－－physician－－surgeon；希望，期望wish－－hope－－expect－－want。

不過在記憶這些單詞時，有必要了解使用上的區別，以免日後使用不當。

3.2、反義詞。即把一個詞與其反義詞結合起來記憶。如：optimistic（樂觀的）－－pessimistic（悲觀的）；maximum（最大量）－－minimum（最小量）；strong（強壯的）－－weak（虛弱的）。

3.3、 同類詞。即把詞義含有相同性質的事物或動作的單詞編在—起記憶。如：衣物：clothes，coat，dress，shirt，blouse，skirt，sweater，jacket，uniform，gown，trousers等。文具：stationery，pen，pencil，ball-pen，pencil-box，ruler，eraser，in，inkpot，sharpener，compass等。烹調；cook，boil，fry，bake，braise，smoke，roast，simmer，stew等。

每人記憶單詞的方法有所不同，只要適合自己就是好方法。但一般說來，記憶英語單同時應該注意以下幾點：

1、切忌貪多、求快。飯要一口一口地吃，詞要一個—個地記，要學會以舊帶新、循序漸進、鞏固舊單詞、擴大新詞彙。

2、詞句結合，詞境結合。離開了語句和情境，詞就沒有生命，因此為記單詞而記單詞的方法是不可取的。最好的方法是將單詞與日常生活語境結合起來，在使用中記憶，這樣的單詞記憶才具有活力。

3、運用科學方法，增強記憶。根據遺忘先快後慢的規律，要想增強單詞的記憶，就得積極應用、大膽實踐，不斷提高單詞的復現率。現代社會給我們提供了十分良好的使用英語的環境，我們應該充分利用一切機會多聽、多說、多看英語，使單詞經常出現在我們的腦海里，這樣自然就不易被遺忘。
