通常我們可以把詞彙分為以下四類。

一是極通俗的詞彙。北京人說「顛兒了」，就是「再見」的意思，這個詞有點像英語里的俚語，不是誰都明白，也不是誰都會用的。

北外教授陳德彰在書里寫「l heard him driving his pigs to market」(我聽見他打鼾)。

做翻譯那幾年，沒有人和我說過這樣的話，我也不敢和別人說。為什麼？因為它是俚語。若對背景文化了解得不夠透徹，這類表達不敢用。

二是口語類詞彙。比如我們不太說的、老外喜歡的反意疑問句，就極具口語特徵。

表示「出現」，既可以用appear，也可以用emerge。表示「帝王將相的力量(尤其是政治和軍事的力量)」，應該用might，這時大家可別把might的意思理解成「可能」。

四是學科術語。這類詞彙主要指的是在某個專業里的術語。例如tuck，這個詞在口語中意思是「掖被子」，這個意思在美劇里很常見。

在足球規則里有這樣一句話：「The player should tuck the shirt into the shorts.」(上衣必須塞進短褲里。)這句話里tuck的意思稍微書面點。

但足球教練在指揮訓練時，對著四個後衛大喊：「Tuck in！」這就是專業術語了，意思是「內收，收一收！」托福考試里學科詞彙很多，比如chlorophyll (葉綠素)、the Pleistocene (更新世)等，如果不搞這些專業，通過上下文，大體對這些詞的意思有個感覺就可以。

所以，我給大家的建議是，對於俚語類詞彙，如果不了解相關文化， 建議不要學。
