背單詞的壞處之一是要記憶的單詞是孤立鬆散的，按照字母順序排列的，這些單詞和自己沒有任何直接的關系，絲毫不能提高自己的興趣。是個非常被動的過程，而記憶本身是主動的。比如，你對自己非常感興趣的異性的名字會記住，你對自己痛心的經歷會記住，不是因為你重復的次數多，而是因為你是主動的記憶者。背單詞的第二個壞處是，你背單詞即使記憶住了這個單詞的含義，但是你不會使用寫作。而且，單詞的含義還經常變遷。在語言環境中，單詞的含義好比人的角色，一個人你知道他的名字或者護照號，是不能算得上了解了他。因為，他可能是個丈夫，情人，父親，兄弟，老師他有不同的角色。如果背誦單詞能夠學好英文，中國人早就應該比現在英文好幾百倍了。 我真的不明白為什麼那麼多人背單詞，背了幾十年都沒有學好英文，怎麼還有人在那裡背單詞，而且還有各種個樣的人編寫各種各樣的單詞本。簡直荒唐，竟然還有人研究記憶單詞的規律和技術！哇塞那樣還是學習語言嗎？好比是給鴨子做飼料配方，肯定沒有原生態的野鴨子味道鮮美。中國人還有什麼雅思詞彙，GRE詞彙，諸如此類。這些對付考試的工具短期是有些效果的，但是你學好英文不能靠這個。 讀英文句子就不同了，如果你每天閱讀一個英文句子，一定超過你背誦二十個單詞的價值。學習句子避免了背誦單詞的孤立零散的弊端，而且句子給你單詞實際的意義。在一個句子中，你完全欣賞單詞的美麗。背誦單詞好比看一系列死氣沉沉的呆板照片（部分攝影師作品除外），請問這種情況下你能認識幾個活人？而學習英文句子理解一個單詞，就好比是到一個喜歡的人在做她或者他自己最擅長的事情。有了場景和具體事情。 閱讀句子固然是好，但是句子要自己在喜歡的文章中尋找。 在回答這個問題之前，我講自己學習下棋的故事。我喜歡下象棋，但是水平不高那是十幾年前的事情了。我就開始用心理解自己輸的原因，後來我發現了一個人無論如何都超過我，他就說了一句，你看看棋譜吧。我於是就到了書店，購買了一些象棋譜，但是，我並不知道哪個象棋譜更好，可是我的心態非常正確，我沒有希望購買一本書能夠讓我閱讀完畢，就可以功力大增，天下無敵，再說，我下象棋也不是為了成為天下無敵的棋手，我知道自己沒有天賦，我是用象棋來強迫平靜自己內心。於是就隨便買了一本《金鵬十八變》，認真研讀。後來就自己慢慢體會了象棋中的道理。棋藝就有點進展。 學習英文，何嘗不是如此呢？當你問我我該讀哪本書的時候？您是否自己思考過問題的答案呢？也許很多人習慣了自己詢問，而不是自己思考。這是多麼淺顯的道理啊。 天下沒有一本棋譜可以讓你成為無敵手，也沒有一劑良葯可以瞬間治療疾病，更沒有一個樂譜可以使你成為音樂家。只有你自己慢慢經歷這些錯誤，曲折，困惑你越是想擺脫，這些東西就越是纏繞著你。生命的意義就是這樣曲曲折折。 我學習英文是自己主動尋找自己感興趣的東西，閱讀過程中，我非常注意英文的表達。我給大家舉個例子。我在一個小書攤上看到有人賣聖經，就隨便翻了一頁，看到一個句子：I will stretch out my hand against you. 我甚至想到了另外的句子：Let the old, the young, the rich, and the poor strech out their hands against this scandal! 這樣就是主動學習，一個簡單的stretch 一旦和hand 以及against 連用，就產生了無與倫比的效果。 我們可以看到學習句子的妙處。首先是你喜歡這個句子，理解了才會自己應用。 我總是喜歡閱讀一些英文原版書籍，然後記住一些好句子，理解後自己開始模仿。 我再給大家舉些例子。我在閱讀Mark Twain這本書的時候，看到無數好句子，其中一個是這樣的：...constantly worried about money as her family teetered between near-prosperity and genteel poverty. 這個句子說她的家庭窮不算窮，富不算富，實在是太妙的表達。我就學習，記憶，那個單詞teeter就一下子記住了。當我不太拿得准這個單詞，就會查字典。 大家不妨嘗試，閱讀英文句子，每天閱讀。每天一個句子都比沒有學習要好得多。祝福你們學習快樂。 ［
