㈠ 英語中表達倍數的三個常用句型和例句

語中表示倍數增減或倍數對比的句型多種多樣，他們是容易譯錯的難點之一。為什麼呢？主要是因為英漢兩語存在語言與思維差異，漢語句式少，英語句式多，它的英漢表達在語言形式、邏輯意念和數值三者完全吻合的對應句很少。

因此，在翻譯的時候容易產生分歧。首先，「n times+adj比較級+than」和「n times+as+adj原級+as」兩種句型的理解和譯法爭議極大，有的學者認為兩種句型應該都翻譯成凈增（n-1）倍，而有的卻認為前者應譯成凈增n 倍，後者應譯成凈增（n-1）倍。到底那一種翻譯才是正確的？

Evans認為：The word times may be used in comparing a large thing with a small one,as in it is three times as large and it is three times larger. The first form is perfectly clear but the second is ambiguous. It means to some people three times as large and to other four times as large. For this reason,it should be avoided.(1975:514)但是Randolph Quick卻對這個句型有著截然不同的看法。他認為：Count as many…as noncount as much… as are equivalent to more… than when they are premodified by a times---phrase.(1985:1139)。我們不妨看一下下面這些科技概念的翻譯。

（例1）：Sound travels nearly three times faster in copper than in lead. 聲音在銅中傳播的速度幾乎比在鉛中快三倍.

溫度為20℃時，聲音在銅中的傳播速度是：縱波3600米/秒，橫波為2250米/秒；在鉛中的傳播速度是：縱波1230米秒，橫波720米/秒。因此，議成「比…快3倍」顯然是誤譯，應是「比…快2倍」或者「是…的3倍」。

（例2）：Asia is 4 times larger than Europe.亞洲比歐洲大4倍。

眾所周知，亞洲的面積是4，400萬平方公里，歐洲的面積是1，016萬平方公里，4400÷1016≈4，因此亞洲的面積是歐洲的四倍，而不是原譯中的大四倍。

從上可見，在英語倍數表達示的數量概念上，倍數都包括基數。因此，「n times+adj比較級+than」和「n times+as+adj原級+as」這兩種句型都應該翻譯成「是……的n倍」，或「比……大（n-1）倍」。而認為「n times more…」句型中n應為凈增數顯然是受到了Evans的影響。

decrease常被rece，shorten，go／slow down等詞替代。

e.g. When the voltage is stepped up by ten times, the strength of the current is stepped down by ten times.電壓升高9倍，電流強度便降低9/10（即90％）。
e.g. The equipment reced the error probability by a factor of 5.該設備誤差概率降低了4/5。
（三）there is a n-fold decrease/rection…應譯為：減至1/n [或：減少（n一1）/n]。
這個句型還有其它一些形式：
e.g. A rapid decrease by a factor of 7 was observed．     發現迅速減少到1/7。
e.g. The principal advantage of the procts is a two-fold rection in weight. 這些產品的主要優點是重量減輕了1/2。
英語在表述或比較倍數時，無論使用什麼句型（除了不含倍數詞的again句型外）都包括基礎倍數在內，因此都不是凈增或凈減n倍，而是凈增或凈減n-1倍。
