從小學習語言對掌握該語言無疑是好的，但關鍵是孩子應該在早期主要掌握什麼語言？當然是首先掌握好母語。語言專家研究表明：當孩子的大腦忙於掌握語言，如果訓練過度，必然會壓抑抽象邏輯思維能力的發展，所以，語言能力強、外語好的孩子，數學、物理學習往往卻很吃力，學習成績偏科。所以，不能一味訓練孩子的語言能力，反而限制了其它能力的發展。

家長認為語言訓練有助於提高孩子的智力，然而，心理學家研究表明：人的智力是注意力、觀察力、記憶力、想像力、思維能力和操作能力的綜合。兒童在進行智力活動時，這幾種能力都在發揮自己的作用。而每種能力的發展水平又會影響到其他能力的發展，甚至影響整個智力的發展。例如，一個孩子的注意力差，不能很好地集中在一件事情上，那麼，他就不能認真觀察事物，不能很好地記住事物的特徵，不能產生完整的想像，更不能進行連續的思維，所以，有些家長覺得自己的孩子看上去挺聰明，可就是學習成績不理想，其實就是因為孩子的注意力不集中所造成的。心理學家在對孩子的學習能力進行訓練時，要測驗孩子的智能發展水平和注意力集中程度，然後進行有針對性的訓練，而不是只注重語言的訓練。
