由於生活在兩個「國家」，忍不住又要做一番對比，權當一個參考。需要說明的是，中美兩國都有老年問題，我的一些說法，也不過是出自敘述便利的粗線條概括。
在美國，照說老人和子女不住一起，地廣人稀，應該更寂寞，可是為什麼沒有這些問題呢？美國是「兒童的天堂，老人的地獄」一說，多流傳於華人中間，因為很多老人過來交通不便，語言不通，才有這些問題。本土的老人好像自得其樂的居多，甚至說自己是「心裡的年輕人」。還有的一些社區和公寓（俗稱老年公寓），專供老人居住，說是入住者必須65歲以上。
我發現，美國老人退休時間比較晚，這在很大程度上緩解了寂寞的問題。很多美國老人一直上班，直到真的干不動為止。美國沒有「單位」這個概念，從一個地方退休後，繼續去另外一個地方上班，包括去沃爾瑪做些雜事，可能這些退休後的工作工資不高，但總讓其有事可做。國內退休時間過早，有的50歲才出頭就退了。倘活到80歲，後面還有30年賦閑在家。要是有機會的話，應該去找點別的事情去做。這不光是錢的問題，人活著，能奉獻於他人是一種美好的感覺，讓人感覺充實。如果沒有工作機會，做做義工也好。
現在好多老人成天想著怎麼健身保養。一個人老圍繞著自己活著的話，會把自己越包越小，越來越郁悶。
讓社區生活豐富多彩，應該是老齡社會的必由之路。美國社區生活很發達。很多中老年人去教會，星期三查經，星期天做禮拜，說不定還有別的小組學習的機會，這就滿足了一種社區歸屬的深層需要。除了宗教機構外，各式各樣的其他社區項目也非常多，比如我曾經去考察過的俱樂部就有不少，如「婦女俱樂部」、「詩歌俱樂部」等等。如果中國也舉辦這種社區中心（哪怕是營利性質，讓大家交會費），或者把現有的社區中心真正用活起來，也能解決中老年人離開了單位和家庭之後找不到「第三處所」的問題。
寫了這些，或許也有老年朋友質問：你有朝一日不老啊？我想，人老了生病體弱自然不好，我也不盼望，但我喜歡寫寫譯譯，沒人打攪我求之不得，估計老來不必擔心無聊。老年階段其實應發展一些愛好，畢竟晚年要有很多時間獨處。這時候把過去的理想給撿起來就很好，比如愛爾蘭裔作家麥考特，就是退休後發現自己有時間了，開始創作，在晚年寫出了多本很有影響的書，如《安琪拉的灰燼》《教書匠》等。
