英語四級卷面總分為710分，作文及翻譯各佔15%，也就是各106.5分，作文和翻譯分數一共專212分。

大學英語四級考試的主要對象是根據教育大綱修完大學英語四級的在校專科生、本科生或研究生。大學英語考試根據理工科本科和文理科本科用的兩個《大學英語教學大綱》，由教育部（原國家教育委員會）高等教育司組織的全國統一的單科性標准化教學考試，分大學英語四級考試（CET-4）和大學英語六級考試（CET-6）兩種。
