全國大學生英語競賽A類等級考試適用於研究生參加。
全國大學生英語競賽B類等級考內試B類適容用於英語專業本、專科學生參加。
全國大學生英語競賽C類等級考試適用於非英語專業本科生參加。
全國大學生英語競賽D類等級考試適用於體育、藝術、高職高專類學生參加。
全國大學生英語競賽的競賽時間：
初賽時間及形式：初賽定於每年的4月中旬（4月第二個星期日）上午9：00一11：00在全國各地同時舉行。初賽賽題包括筆答和聽力兩部分。初賽聽力採取播放錄音的形式。
決賽時間及形式：決賽筆試（含聽力）定於每年5月中旬（5月第二個星期日）上午9：00一11：00在全國各地同時舉行。決賽分兩種方式，各地可任選一種：第一種是只參加筆試（含聽力），第二種是參加筆試（含聽力）和口試。
只參加筆試（含聽力）的學生的決賽成績滿分為150分；既參加筆試（含聽力）又參加口試的學生滿分是200分，其中筆試分數為150分（含聽力），口試分數為50分。
決賽賽題和口試方案、題目由全國競賽組委會統一命制。各省級競賽組委會選擇是否統一參加口試，並決定口試地點、時間、形式等具體事宜。
