It』s noticable that western holidays are becoming increasingly popular day by day, while chinese traditional festivals are being somewhat neglected. Not long before about 10 doctors in beijing university and qinghua unversity announced that we should reject the invasion of western holidays ,because they regard western holidays as an challenge against our traditional festivals and culture.
Frankly speaking, i don't quite agree with them.Indeed, we should never neglect or even discard our traditonal festivals as china boasts a brilliant history and splendid traditions. (examples).But why can't we absorb the meaningful western holidays and culture.
There are obvious reasons why some western holidays are so popular in china. On the one hand, some of the western holidays which we chinese don't have are reasonable and meaningful, such as father's day and april fool's day etc. On the other hand,the prevalence of globalization enables western culture to prevail in china. Overwhelmed by such a trend,chinese unconsiciously get involved in western holidays and culture.
With the further development of the whole world, the cultural communication between different countries and nations becomes faster and more and more important. We are indeed from different nations, but we are the citizens of the same world, so the outstanding culture of different nations is the commom wealth of everyone on the earth.The only way for us to protect our traditional culture is to reject the foreign culture? The answer is definitely no. What we ought to do is to spare no effort to ecate chinese to get to know and treasure our splendid traditions instead of rejecting foreign culture. Only by ecating can we set our confidence and belief towards our culture. Only by ecating can we play a really important role in the world.

Responsibility is a Badge of Honour for Youth
Facing this audience on the stage, I have the exciting feeling of participating in the march of history, for what we are facing today is more than a mere competition or contest. It is an assembly of some of China's most talented and motivated people, representatives of a younger generation that are preparing themselves for the coming of a new century.
I'm grateful that I've been given this opportunity, at such a historic moment, to stand here as a spokesman of my generation and to take a serious look back at the past 15 years, a crucial period for every one of us and for this nation as well.
Though it is only within my power to tell about my personal experience, and only a tiny fragment of it at that, it still represents, I believe, the root of a spirit which has been essential to me and to all the people bred by the past 15 years.
In my elementary years, there was a little girl in the class who worked very hard but somehow could never do satisfactorily in her lessons.
The teacher asked me to help her, and it was obvious that she expected a lot from me. but as a young boy, restless, thoughtless, I always tried to evade her so as to get more time to enjoy myself.
One day before the final exam, she came up to me and said, "Could you please explain this to me? I want very much to do better this time. " I started explaining, and finished in a hurry. Pretending not to notice her still confused eyes, I ran off quickly. Nat surprisingly, she again did very badly in the exam. And two months later, at the beginning of the new semester, word came of her death of blood cancer. No one ever knew about the little task I failed to fulfill, but I couldn't forgive myself. I simply couldn't forget her eyes, which seem to be asking, "Why didn't you do a little more to help me, when it was so easy for you? Why didn't you understand a little better the trust placed in you, so that I would not have to leave this world in such pain and regret?"
I was about eight or nine years old at that time, but in a way it was the very starting point of my life, for I began to understand the word "responsibility" and to learn to always do my ties faithfully and devotedly, for the implications of that sacred word has dawned on me: the mutual need and trust of people, the co-operation and inter-reliance which are the very foundation of human society.
Later in my life, I continued to experience many failures. But never again did I feel that regret which struck me at the death of the girl, for it makes my heart satisfied to think that I have always done everything in my power to fulfill my responsibilities as best I can.
As I grew up, changed and improved by this incident and many other similar ones, I began to perceive the changes taking place around me and to find that society, in a way, was in its formative years like myself. New buildings, new commodities and new fashions appear every day.
New ideas, new information, new technologies. People can talk with each other from any corner of the earth in a matter of seconds. Society is becoming more competitive.
Words like indiviality and creativity are getting more emphasis and more people are rewarded for their hard work and efforts. Such is the era in which this generation ,grows and matures.
Such is the era in which this generation will take over the nation from our fathers and learn to run it. Yet in the meantime, many problems still exist.
We learn that crimes take place in broad daylight with crowds of people looking on and not assisting. We hear that there are still about 1 million children in this country who can't even afford to go to elementary schools while enormous sums of money are being squandered away on dinner parties and luxury cars.
We buy shoddy medicines, or merely worthless junk in the name of medicines, that aggravate, rather than alleviate our diseases since money, many people believe, is the most important thing in the world that must be made, even at the expense of morality and responsibility.
Such an era, therefore, determines that we are a generation with a keener sense of competition and efficiency and a greater readiness to think critically and act creatively.
Such an era, furthermore, demands, that we are a generation with a clear perception of our historical responsibility and an aggressive will to take action and solve the problems. History has long been preparing these qualities in this generation and it is now calling us forward to give testimony to our patriotism and heroism towards this nation and all humanity.
Standing here now, I think of the past 15 years of my life as an ordinary student. Probably I'll be an ordinary man for the rest of my life. But this doesn't discourage me any, for I know that with my sense of responsibility and devoted efforts to always strive, for the best, it's going to be a meaningful and worthwhile life that I will be living.
Standing here now, I think of the past 15 years of this nation, which has achieved greatness that inspired millions of people of my age, most of whom will not attain fame or prestige and only a few of whom will be remembered by posterity. But that doesn't discourage us any, because we know that the world watches, the world listens, the world is waiting to see where this nation will be heading in a time of rich opportunities and fierce competition.
I can't ever forget that little girl in my class who couldn't had the same opportunities as any of us here to enjoy a wonderful life today and a hopeful world tomorrow.
It is the sacred responsibility of this generation to face up to the challenges of the new century and to devote our sweat and blood, our wisdom and passion, to the historic cause of making this nation a greater and happier land for every one of us.
We are not going to evade that responsibility. We are going to let people down. And people, far and near, will hear of us. Frost will be brought to their backbones and tears to their eyes when our stories are told and retold, So let us go forth, my fellow members of this luckily chosen generation, and meet the new century in victory and glory.

站在台上面對大家，我心情十分激動。好像是在參加一次歷史性的長征。我們今天面對的遠不只一場競賽或角逐。這是才華出眾，生氣勃勃的中國青年的一次聚會。我們是青年一代的代表。為迎接新世紀的到來，我們正在從各方面作好准備。
在這一歷史時刻，能有機會代表同齡人在此認真地回顧於國於己都至關重要的過去的15年，我感激萬分。
盡管只能談談個人經歷，而且只涉及其中一個小小的片段，但我相信，它仍然折射出對我和在過去15年間一同成長起來的青年人都不可缺少的一種思想基礎。
我上小學時，班上有位小姑娘，學習非常刻苦而成績卻不盡人意。
老師要我幫助她。看得出，她也寄厚望於我。但我那時還是個小男孩，坐不住，不懂事。我老是ME避她。以便有更多時間自己玩。
期末考試前一天，她來求我說「請你給我講解一下行嗎?這次我很想考得好一點。」我開始給她講解，不一會兒便草草收場，假裝沒有察覺她迷茫的眼神，一溜煙兒地跑開了。不出所料，這次她又考砸了。兩個月後，新學期依始，傳來她死於血癌的消息。我沒有完成那項小小的任務，無人知曉。但我卻不能原諒自己。她的眼睛令我難以忘懷，彷彿在責問我，「你為什麼不願多幫助我呢?這對於你來說，並不費事。你為什麼不能理解我對你的信賴，而讓我帶著痛苦和遺憾離開這個世界?」
我當時才八九歲。但從某種意義上講，這件事成了我生活的新起點。因為我開始體會到「責任」二字的意義，並盡心盡力地學著完成自己的義務。我也逐漸領會了這個神聖字眼的深刻內含:人與人之間的彼此需要和信任、合作和依賴正是人類社會存在的基礎。
之後，我在生活中又經受過多次失敗，但那小姑娘之死所引起的懊悔，心裡卻不曾再現。想到自己做每一件事都能盡職盡責，一種滿足之感便油然而生。
此事及類似的多起事件改變了我，完善了我。當我長大成人，我開始領悟周圍發生的一切變化。我發現，從某種意義上說，社會跟我一樣，正處在一個自我完善的時期。新建築、新商品、新款式一天一個樣。新思維、新信息、新技術層出不窮。即便萬里相隔，人們在轉瞬之間即可相互交談。社會競爭越演越烈。
人們越來越強調個性和創造性。越來越多的人因工作努力而受到獎賞。這就是當今的時代，一代新人由成長邁入成熟的時代。這是我們這一代人接替父輩治國安邦的時代。然而，我們也面臨很多間題。
據悉，壞人在光天化日之下作惡，周圍的群眾居然袖手旁觀，無動於衷。我還聽說，目前我國尚有100萬兒童連小學也上不起，而巨額資金卻拿去舉辦奢侈的宴會和購置豪華的轎車。
我們常常買的是劣質葯品，或名曰葯品實為一文不值的廢物，非但不能除病去痛，反而會使病情加重。在某些人看來，世上金錢最寶貴，只要能賺錢，不惜犧牲道德和責任。
因而，這個時代賦予我們的是更強烈的競爭和效率意識，使我們更善於批判性地思考和創造性地行動。
此外，這個時代要求我們這一代人必須認清自己肩負的歷史重任，下定決心，採取行動，解決上述問題。長期以來，歷史一直在我們這一代人身上培養著這些品質。現在，歷史呼喚我們挺身而出，以實際行動向全民族及全人類證實我們的拳拳愛國之心和大無畏的英雄主義。
此刻，我站在講台上回顧15年來的學生生活。今後的歲月，我很可能平平淡淡地度過。但這絲毫不會讓我心灰意冷。因為我知道，憑借強烈的責任感和精益求精的不懈奮斗，我將追求一種有意義的生活，一種不枉此生的生活。

the diversity of my university life
Look! There is a rainbow! On the first day of my university life, when I walked into the campus, there was a rainbow bridging over the fountain, I hadn』 seen rainbow for a long time. I was so excited, and leaped high with joy. My ponytail danced with my happiness. It was a propitious sign indicated that my life in university would be colorful, and actually it is!
After my entry into university, I found my life so busy. What I should do is not only gaining the scholarship but also being a good monitor and leader of shanghai university percussion band. I got the 1st and 2nd price of scholarship in my 2 years of study. I organized charity donations for schoolmates with financial difficulty or disease. Every week, I give drum lesson to new members of our percussion band. And there are always a lot of non-business performances, such as entertaining guests, celebrating party, cultural exchange with foreign students delegations and their bands. Of course, part-time job is indispensable in my vacations. I ask for no payment but aim at getting accustomed to the society.
Sometimes, my friends advise me not to tire myself out with such a tight schele. I wake up before the rooster crow, and continue working till very late when others are enjoying their sweet dreams. Every time I come back from the rehearsal of percussion band, I have to finish my homework with the help of my own charged light because of the blackout in out dormitory. Maybe such kind of life is something like an ascetic, but we should work hard and try hard in our youth, aren』t we?
When I represented shanghai university to take part in the POND』s new century lady competition held in May, when I show off on the stage, when I emerged as 「the girl of vitality」, I made use of every bit of time to compensate the classes I had missed, I made use of every chance to learn from other girls with vitality, versatility and intelligence, I made use of this opportunity to present our university students』 state of mind.
There is a little bitterness in my busy life, but at the same time, there is sweetness. It is colorful. I make fun out of it. I love it. When I snatch a little leisure I lie on the green grass, reading books, I cripple myself in the window-seat in our library---the 2nd largest in shanghai---I absorb knowledge like a hungry sponge, I wonder along the bank of river, listening to oriels in willows and get a splendid sunset view of the campus. The sky is drunk with the sunset; I am drunk with the sweetness of my like.
Besides study, music is the most important part of my life. I began to learn piano at 6 and drum at 11. In school, I teach students to play jazz drums, kettledrums, xylophone and so on. We give performances in many universities to popularize percussion and to bring music to them. I』ve learned drums for so many years and it can』t be separated from my life now. It is my beating heart, my pulse, veins and arteries. When I play it, I wanna move my body, I can sit on my chair anymore I can』t help swinging I communicate with the audience I call upon them to join me with the beat of drums the rhythm of music and the fragmence of youth. Hi, come on!
In one summer vacation, I volunteered to teach my neighborhood community and taxi drivers to learn 100 English sentences for APEC. I made great efforts to walk out of my air-conditioned room and walk into the hot and suffocating weather. Some of these people didn』t have the opportunity to get good ecation, and even didn』t know ABC! I tried hard to find and easy way to teach them. For example, how to remember 「the Oriental TV tower」? I put 「tower」 as 「套鞋」 in shanghai dialect. It is not the right way to teach and learn English like this, but actually it is the only way. In the end of my vacation, they could use some daily language. I was so glad and thought my efforts rewarding. Being a volunteer, I mould myself serve the people and welcome the coming APEC. Being a university student living in ivory tower, I feel the hardness of taxi driver. It was at that time that I cherished most my opportunity to study in shanghai university which enjoys the first rate facilities in china. I will work hard and contribute myself to our country in the future.
And another summer vacation, I worked as a junior clerk in an import and export company. I didn』t know how to draw up invoice; how to make customs declaration forms; how to fill the packing list or I even didn』t know what is CIF! I strongly feel my lack of working and social experience; these are knowledge that can』t be learned from textbooks. How to teach oneself, how to make a circle of acquaintances and get along with people of various characters---I think these are the preparation of entry into society and are more important than my scores in examinations. Working in the company, I threw away my t-shirts jeans track shoes and changed into suits dresses and high-hell shoes. It was far from comfortable and occasionally I stumbled over my steps. Oh! How difficult it is to be a white-collar office lady! One should pretend to be a noble lady, working all day before the table, wearing the dangerous high-heel shoes! Isn』t it a challenge?
My life in university is like allegro. It is painstaking but worthwhile; bitter but sweet; tiring but exciting. The rainbow appeared in my first day of university life promised me a colorful life. Over the rainbow, there is the sky high above. The way ahead is long, I see no ending, yet high or low, I will search my will unbending!

大學的生活和小學，中學，高中，截然不同啊！人好象變的輕鬆了許多，當大家在一起時，什麼事都想干，什麼豪言壯語都能述說，然而，當一個人在宿舍時，一切都是靜悄悄的時候，彷彿自己一下子沒有了方向，時間變的不做主了。大學是我們繼續學習和深造的地方——大學是我們的家。來自天南地北的同學們結成一個新的家庭。大學更是我們熱血青年揮灑汗水，收獲笑容的樂土！據了解，新生入學後一月內是各種學生組織換屆納新的高潮期，很多新生都積極投身這股熱潮，在活動中鍛煉自己。
高中時老師說的話，應驗了，人們不是單純的朋友了。人與人之間有了利用，有了嫉妒，有了猜疑，為了那些學分，人們的心變了！老師還說大學的生活，學習，處世，和以往的會很不同的！現在覺的真的很不同啊！
雖然軍訓已成過去式，不少同學仍懷念那段與同學「惺惺相惜「的艱苦生活。他們表示，軍訓雖然又苦又累，但是鍛煉了每個人永不言敗的堅忍與團結協作的團隊精神。走過軍訓，更有信心迎接隨之而來的大學生活的種種考驗。
許多同學都是第一次離家那麼遠，來到陌生的城市，陌生的校園，面對的是一張張陌生卻友好的面孔。豐富多採的活動帶給同學們的是新鮮，愉悅。繁忙的學習，工作占滿了課余時間，充實了自由的生活，幫助同學們排遣那縈繞心頭的思鄉情，那初來乍到的陌生感。
大學是社會的縮影，社會的預科班。 學生是校園的主角，大一新生更是新鮮的血液。
面對嶄新的生活，我們都有夢想。面對新的征程，一路風景，我們不忘欣賞，更不忘前行。生活的壓力也許讓我們手足無措，學習的困難也許讓我們暫時迷茫，但鍛煉總須挫折，我們堅信「明天會更好」。自己的生活自己把握，我們一定會活得精彩！

Another common notion is that there are opportunities everywhere. Opportunity may occur to anybody at any time and under any circumstances as long as he/she keeps making constant efforts. As a student， you can get to the top through your hard work. As a businessman， you can succeed through accurate calculation and with a complete certainty that you can make a profit.
In my opinion， opportunity favors only those who keep trying and who are ready for it. For example, when I was studying in high school there was a national chemistry competition. Most of my classmates thought that we had virtually no chance of winning the competition since we were studying in high school. But I felt that it was a good chance and I must grasp it. So I prepared for it thoroughly and finally I won the first prize. In conclusion, I believe that opportunities are abundant (abandon) in our society and everyone is equal with them. We can acquire them only if we are prepared and qualified. Just as a proverb says 「Opportunities are only for the prepared minds.」
