在美国，照说老人和子女不住一起，地广人稀，应该更寂寞，可是为什么没有这些问题呢？美国是“儿童的天堂，老人的地狱”一说，多流传于华人中间，因为很多老人过来交通不便，语言不通，才有这些问题。本土的老人好像自得其乐的居多，甚至说自己是“心里的年轻人”。还有的一些社区和公寓（俗称老年公寓），专供老人居住，说是入住者必须65岁以上。
我发现，美国老人退休时间比较晚，这在很大程度上缓解了寂寞的问题。很多美国老人一直上班，直到真的干不动为止。美国没有“单位”这个概念，从一个地方退休后，继续去另外一个地方上班，包括去沃尔玛做些杂事，可能这些退休后的工作工资不高，但总让其有事可做。国内退休时间过早，有的50岁才出头就退了。倘活到80岁，后面还有30年赋闲在家。要是有机会的话，应该去找点别的事情去做。这不光是钱的问题，人活着，能奉献于他人是一种美好的感觉，让人感觉充实。如果没有工作机会，做做义工也好。
现在好多老人成天想着怎么健身保养。一个人老围绕着自己活着的话，会把自己越包越小，越来越郁闷。
