但是满满一本书的内容让电影在不到三十分钟里全部概括完成。包括其中小王子与飞行员的相遇，为了玫瑰奉献的经过，在其他几个星球的遭遇，书中作为精华为了建立羁绊和狐狸的对话以及小王子与蛇做交易离开地球的部分，都大幅度减少，如果没有看过原著的人完全感受不到原著的魅力，反而像是突兀的加进去的一样。
电影《小王子》反而像是在一个新的故事中加入了小王子的故事。新的故事在后半段的讲述中变成了一个黑童话，相对于前半段的童话，在后半段的现实中，高傲的国王是个电梯驾驶员、喜爱脱帽的自大狂是警察，数学家则成为了压迫剥削人民的代表者商人。而童话中的主角，那个失落的、忧郁的小王子成为了一个麻木的懦弱的“王子先生”，老师强硬的拉住小姑娘让她读书让她成长的方式，无不让人感受到现实的残忍，大人的冷酷。
