這時，一位農民扛著鋤頭路過，東郭先生急忙拉住他，請農民評理。可是狼卻一口否定東郭先生救過它的命。

老農不相信口袋能裝下一隻狼，於是讓東郭先生和狼再演示一下，於是東郭先生把狼重新裝進袋子。農民一下 把口袋扎緊，不讓狼出來。

《東郭先生與狼》的故事出自馬中錫的《東田集》，是根據古代的傳說發展而成的一個寓言故事。

作者通過這個寓言，徹底揭示了狼的本性：在它遇著危險的時候，也會裝做軟弱可憐的樣子，以迷惑那些思想糊塗的人，求得他的庇護，保全自己。危險一過，卻又立刻露出吃人的本性，連救命恩人也不肯放過。

對待吃人的狼，就只能堅決、徹底地消滅它。但是東郭先生恰巧不明白這一點，他對狼也「兼愛」，表示憐憫，這些弱點正為狼所利用，結果幾乎被狼吃掉了。

可是像東郭先生那樣對敵人存著幻想的人，往往不是一次教訓就能使他真正認清是非的。當老丈最後要東郭先生殺死中山狼的時候，他又發起「不害狼乎」的慈悲來，因而被老丈識為「仁陷於愚」。
