根據上文「Two of the children…」
look out「當心;小心」;get out「出來」;take out「拿出來」;work out「想出」。
根據第二段第一句「James won the toss and Jack went down into the mines. 」可知,應該是go down into the mines,所以選擇答案B。

Life gets noisier every day and very few people can be free from noise of some sort or another. It doesn't matter where you live-in the middle of a modern city, or a faraway village-the chances are that you'll be disturbed by jet aeroplanes, transistor radios, oil-powered engines, etc. We seem to be getting used to noise, too. Some people feel quite lonely without background music while they're working.
Scientific tests have shown that total silence can be a very frightening experience for a human being. However, some people enjoy listening to pop music which is very loud, and this can do harm to their eardrums. The noise level in some discos is far above the usual safety level for heavy instrial areas.
One recent report about noise and concentration suggested that although a lot of people say that noise disturbs their concentration, what really influences their ability to concentrate is a change in the level of noise. It goes on to say that a background noise which doesn't change too much (music, for example) may even help people to concentrate.

3.Some people have their hearing harmed_____.

A. while listening to pop music

B. in total silence

C. when talking loudly

5. What may even let people concentrate?

Now satellites are helping to forecast(預報)the weather. They are in space, and they can reach any part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere(大氣), because this is where the weather forms(形成). They send these pictures to the weather stations. So meteorologists(氣象學家)can see the weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will change.

Today, nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive new pictures, the meteorologists compare(比較)them with earlier ones. Perhaps they may find that the clouds have changed ring the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too. In their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this.

So the weather satellites are a great help to the meteorologists. Before satellites were invented, the scientists could forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours.
