Robinson Crusoe is one of the world's most popular adventure novels. Daniel Defoe based his classic tale of shipwreck and survival on an uninhabited island, which is based on a true story. The real Robinson Crusoe was a Scotsman named Alexander Selkirk Born in 1676, when Selkirk was 19 years old he was cited for indecent conct in church. Then he ran off to sea. That was in 1695. By 1703 he was the sailing master of a galley. The following year he joined a pirate expedition to the Pacific Ocean that was led by Capt. William Dampier. Selkirk's ship had Thomas Straddling as its captain.
After spending some time in the Pacific, they were preparing to return to England with their booty. Their ship had suffered considerable damage in battle and Selkirk felt they needed to repair her before setting off around the Horn. The captain disagreed. After an argument, Selkirk refused to go any farther and demanded he be set ashore on the Island of Juan Fernandez, which was about 400 miles off the coast of Chile. The captain was glad to do this.

A Dream of Red MansionsThe novel A Dream of Red Mansions was written 200 years ago. During the last 200 years it conquered countless readers. A Dream of Red Mansions is the peak of ancient Chinese novel. It is also a well－ masterpiece in the world of literature. The author Cao Xueqin lived through the reigns of Emperors Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty. At first his family was favoured by the emperor. But later his house was confiscated and his family sank to the rock bottom of the society. Cao Xueqin too turned from a noble scion to an impoverished youth. In his old age he was so poor that the whole family had to live on thin gruel. In the drastic change he experienced the ups and downs in the snobbish world and observed the sharp conflicts between the rich and the poor. He clearly understood the degenerating quality of his feudal aristocratic family. He wrote this immortal novel in the dire straits. Unfortunately he died in poverty and illness before he finished his work. He was still in his forties then. The novel originally entitled The Story of the Stone, also known as A Dream of Red Mansions, has 80 chapters finished. The rest 40 chapters are believed to have been added by Gao E. An outstanding achievement of A Dream of Red Mansions is that it successfully presents a heart－stirring tragedy, a tragedy of the society, of the time and of human life. A good part of the novel was assigned to the description of the daily depletion of Family Jia and the final bankruptcy of the influential family that had enjoyed a hundred years' prosperity. This symbolised the decline of the feudal society. Cao Xueqin devotes all his feelings to a number of trampled and destroyed young women whom he admired. Neither daughters of influential families nor maid－servants nor actresses from low origins escaped their tragical fate. The destruction of the beautiful invested the whole book with a grace of tragic. Since Jia Baoyu's birth his family arranged him a path to wealth and fame. But his special life experience turned him into a rebel of the feudal family. The genuine love between him and Daiyu was opposed by his family. At last he chose to go to a monastery. Daiyu was intelligent and gifted. She showed contempt to vulgar feudal scholars and denounced the hypocrisy of those who sought fame by way of writing stereotyped essays. She pursued Baoyu's genuine love, but she died in grief. Baochai observed the feudal moral code. To win her parents' favour and to ensure the family's interests, she was forced by Jia's mother and Lady Wang into marrying Baoyu. But she did not win love. She became a victim of the arranged marriage. The tragical marriage among Baoyu, Daiyu and Baochai is the main thread of the whole novel. Their love story has moved every reader. The greatest achievement of the novel lies in its convincing and vivid characterisation. Of the more than four hundred persons depicted in the novel, at least forty are highly indivialised. Under Cao Xueqin's pen those persons not only have their special looks, but their voices and emotions. The subtle mentality of the characters leaves indelible impression in the reader's mind.

英語：提前瀏覽一下每段的前幾句，腦子裡面有個整體概念，大概是說的什麼意思，可以分為幾部分。第一步完成，第二步就是根據題目在原文中定位，找准出題的點，根據答案和原文排除選擇正確答案，十五分鍾就可以搞定，而且准確率高！
中文：一、要克服反復瀏覽的習慣。凡是科技讀物，一般只須順著讀一遍即可。如有必要，也要等整篇讀完之後，再回過頭重復某項內容。避免眼睛不斷地來回移動。

二、要採用「篩選」式閱讀法。有意識地為涉獵專業所需的各種信息而有針對性地讀。

三、要默讀，不要朗讀。發聲的閱讀是快速法的大忌。

四、要在閱讀時，使自己的視線應與讀物成垂直線，並充分發揮視線的「餘光」作用，擴大視幅范圍，多看到一些文章內容。

五、要聚精會神地閱讀。即在快速閱讀時必須「強化」注意力。

六、要提倡有理解目標的閱讀。閱讀時，抓住實質性的關鍵詞。所讀的內容實質，正是閱讀時應弄通的重點。理解並記憶就是我們讀書最終目標。

成功速讀的三要素：速度、記憶和理解。目標是高效實用。速讀的總的要求是速度上要「快」是指要達到常人三至五倍以上的閱讀速度；記憶上要「准」是指對文章的關鍵詞和重點部位的記憶准確率都能夠80%以上；理解上要「清」是指對閱讀文章在閱讀後能夠掌握文章結構，作者、主題、題目等內容。本著上述要求，速讀能力的自我訓練可採用以下幾種方法：

一、回憶法。要提高閱讀速度，必須從按字按詞閱讀的習慣中解放出來，逐步發展到按句按行進行閱讀，以腦圖的形式根據文章主幹與內容形成自己記憶特點的場景與圖像，形象鮮明便於記憶。

二、搜捕法。在擴大視覺幅度的基礎上，可以通過掃視在文章中搜捕自己所需要的關鍵詞和相關內容。在橫掃和縱掃中發現的自己需要搜查抓住目標。

三、歸納法。許多政論性文章每段的主要內容和關鍵詞往往在一段的首或尾，讀者要在速讀中迅速找到並在腦子中歸納出中心意思，加深記憶。

四、摘重法。大多文章可以事先或事中列表或確定摘記綱要，在速讀中把綱要完成，如通過掃視迅速理出文章的要素，如作者、題目、地點、人物、時間，編寫出適合自己記憶特點的綱要來。

五、循序法。一般的文章的條理很清楚，往往只需要把它的目錄迅速熟悉後，在速讀時可以依循著文章標出目錄或要點重點來速讀，以此為基礎來聯想、歸納、畫圖。

六、銜接法。在具有相當速度的基礎上，就可以先讀內容提要，然後在一頁或兩頁上掃視兩三處，把即刻形成的印象與前面獲得的印象銜接起來，逐步連接出文章的整體，最終獲得文章的整體印象。

七、詳略法。在讀長篇或重要文章時，可以把速讀與精讀結合使用，在一般速讀過程中選擇重要章節再仔細閱讀，實行大部分略讀與部分詳速相結合的方法。

八、跳讀法。速讀有的書籍，可以先把掃視的注意力放在發現文章的布局謀篇的構思上，尤其要注意文章要點出現的規律，掌握了這個規律，有的地方就可以跳過不看．同樣能起到掌握要點或獲得所要東西的作用。

We judged that three nights more Would fetch us to Cairo, 1at

the bottom of Illinois, where the Ohio River comes in, andthat was

what we was after．We would sell the raft and get on a steamboat

and go way up the Ohio amongst the free States, and then be out of

trouble．2

Well, the second night a fog begun to come on, and we made for

a tow-head to tie to, for it wouldn't do to try to run in fog；

but when I paddled ahead i n the canoe, with the line, to make fast,

there warn't anything but little saplings totie to．I passed the

line around one of them right on the edge of the cut bank, but there

was a stiff current, and the raft come booming down so lively she

tore it out by the roots and away she went．I see the fog closing

down, and it made meso sick and scared I couldn't budge for most

a half a minuteit seemed to me—and then there warn't no raft in

sight；you couldn't see twenty yards．3 I jumped into the canoe

and runback to the stern and grabbed the paddle and set her back a

stroke．But she didn't come, I was in such a hurry Ihadn't untied

her．I got up and tried to untie her, but I was so excited my hands

shook so I couldn't hardly do anything with them．

As soon as I got started I took out after the raft, hot and heavy,

right down the tow-head．4 That was all right as far asit went,

but the tow-head warn't sixty yards long, and theminute I flew by

the foot of it I shot out into the solid whitefog, and hadn't no

more idea which way I was going than adead man．

Thinks I, it won't do to paddle；first I know I'll run intothe

bank or a tow-head or something；I got to set still andfloat, and

yet it's mighty fidgety business to have to hold yourhands still

at such a time．I whooped and listened．Away downthere, somewheres,

I hears a small whoop, and up comes myspirits．I went tearing after

it, listening sharp to hear it again．The next time it come, I see

I warn't heading for it but head-ing away to the right of it．And

the next time, I was head-ing away to the left of it—and not gaining

on it much, either, for I was flying around, this way and that and

'tother, 5but it was going straight ahead all the time．

I did wish the fool would think to beat a tin pan, and beatit

all the time, but he never did, and it was the still placesbetween

the whoops that was making the trouble for me．Well, I fought along,

and directly I hears the whoops behind me．Iwas tangled good,

now．That was somebody else's whoop．orelse I was turned around．

I throwed the paddle down．I heard the whoop again；itwas behind me yet, but in a different place；it kept coming,

and kept changing its place, and I kept answering, till by-and-by

it was in front of me again and I knowed the current hadswung the

canoe's head down stream and I was all right, ifthat was Jim and

not some other raftsman hollering．I could-n't tell nothing about

voices in a fog, for nothing don't looknatural nor sound natural

in a fog．

The whooping went on, and in about a minute I come a booming

down on a cut bank6 with smoky ghosts of big treeson it, and the

current throwed me off to the left and shot by, amongst a lot of

snags that fairly roared, the current was tear-ing by them so swift．

In another second or two it was solid white and still again．I

set perfectly still, then, listening to my heart thump, and Ireckon

I didn't draw a breath while it thumped a hundred．

I just give up, then．I knowed what the matter was．Thatcut

bank was an island, and Jim had gone down 'tother sideof it．It

warn't no tow-head, that you could float by in tenminutes．It had

the big timber of a regular island；it mightbe five or six mile

long and more than a half a mile wide．

I kept quiet, with my ears cocked, about fifteen minutes,

Ireckon．I was floating along, of course, four or five mile anhour；

but you don't ever think of that．No, you feel like youare laying

dead still on the water；and if a little glimpse of a snap slips

by, you don't think to yourself how fast you're go-ing, but you

catch your breath and think my！how that snag'stearing along．lf

you think it ain't dismal and lonesome outin a fog that way, by

yourself, in the night, you try it once— you'll see．

Next, for about a half an hour, I whoops now and then；atlast

I hears the answer a loog ways off, and tries to follow it, but

I couldn't do it, and directly I judged I'd got into a nestof

towheads, for I had little dim glimpses of them on bothsides of

me, sometimes just a narrow channel between；andsome that I couldn't

see, I knowed was there, because I'd hearthe wash of the current

against the old dead brush and trashthat hung over the banks．Well,

I warn't long losing thewhoops, down amongst the towheads；and I

only tried to chasethem a little while, anyway, because it was worse

than chas-ing a Jack-o-lantern．You never knowed a sound dodge

aroundso, and swap places so quick and so much．
