better 本身已經是比較級了,而more放在多音節形容詞前構成比較級,如 more beautiful 表示更漂亮.
如果more放在better的前面,意思就重復了,但是much可以修飾形容詞的比較級,如much better表示「好多了」

首先，我想說。英語的確是「現在」世界上最通用的語言。但是英語作為表音文字存在一個缺陷就是它會隨著時代的變化而產生讀音的變化，所以拼寫上也會變。你現在去看莎士比亞的作品，是英語寫的，但你已經看不懂了。舉個近點的例子泰戈爾的詩作里還有一些古英語用詞，我們現在就看不懂了。沒學習過古英語的人即使是美國人也看不懂這些作品。
至於法語，使用的國家是挺多的。但除了法國等幾個歐洲國家外，大部分是非洲國家在實用（而且，我有同學問過一些非洲人，他們現在也在說英語，不說法語了）所以學了法語可以閱讀的書主要就是法國出版的以法語書寫的書籍了。但是法語也存在和上面提到的英語一樣的問題，就是無法閱讀古籍。我國這些年來引進的外語圖書中占最大比重的是英語書寫，法語書籍在市面上還是比較少見的。所以你去找書源也會很麻煩。目前來講，我還真沒見過中國有引進非洲某國出版的法語書籍。
雖然漢語在本國的地位越來越低了，但不得不承認，漢語有兩個英語和法語等表音文字都沒有的優點：溝通方言和貫通古今。雖然現代人看文言文有困難，但弄本古漢語字典找個注釋的，想基本看懂，問題是不大的。所以，學會漢語能看不同時代的作品，中國幾千年文明積累下來需要看的書還是蠻多的。
如果非要說一種外語的話，首推的是英語。不過看你的問題，應該是想找英語之外的外語。那我就推薦日語。我認為，日語在學習難度上，對中國人而言，要小於英語和法語。而且網上能找到的日語書籍，國內發行的日語學習刊物，日劇，動漫等資源還是比較豐富的。學習一些日本古代的書籍甚至能幫助我們了解中國古代文化。
