Like most people, I was brought up to look upon life as a process of getting. It was not until in my late thirties that I made this important discovery: giving-away makes life so much more exciting. You need not worry if you lack money. This is how I experimented with giving-away. One discovery I made about giving-away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this world without getting something back, though the return often comes in an unexpected form. One Sunday morning the local post office delivered an important special delivery letter to my home, though it was addressed to me at my office. I wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation. 不容忽視的光污染
①你知道嗎?一個小型廣告燈箱一年可以「吸引」並「殺死」35萬只昆蟲。這是奧地利科學家在一個研究項目中的最新發現。
②其實，很多其它動物也會因為城市的照明而受害。大規模的人造光常常使遷徙中的鳥類迷失方向，美國芝加哥有一幢高樓每年都會「殺死」1000~2000隻候鳥。在2001年的小海龜出生期，人們在大西洋沿岸發現了很多死去的小海龜。據分析，剛出生的小海龜是根據月亮和星星在海水中的倒影而游往海洋的。大西洋沿岸城市燈火通明，使月光和星光黯然失色，導致那些小海龜誤把陸地當成海洋，最終因缺水而殞命。
③在夜晚，地球大氣層會散射城市的燈光，維持較高的亮度。動物們受到光線的刺激，就會精神十足，而原本用於繁殖、自衛和覓食的精力便會無端消耗掉。環境學家還發現，緊靠強光源的樹木存活時間短，而且光合作用能力弱，氧氣釋放量少。
④以上人造光對動植物造成危害的現象可以稱為「光污染」。其實，對人類而言，光污染的危害也不小。近年來，很多高大建築的玻璃幕牆造成了光污染。在夏季陽光的照射下，玻璃幕牆非常令人不適。
⑤除了建築物的玻璃幕牆外，室內牆壁的顏色如果太亮也會引起視覺不舒服。非常光滑的白牆的光反射系數高達90％，比草地、森林或毛面裝飾物高10倍左右。所以粉刷牆壁的時候，最好使用「生態顏色」。所謂生態顏色，就是柔和的自然色彩，而不是那種明亮刺眼的顏色。
