錯譯：他簡直是只大肥貓。也許是加菲貓動畫片的流行會一些人譯出這樣的句子來，「大肥貓」是什麼形象？其實 fat cat 是很早就有的一個俚語，意思是「有權有勢的人」、「大亨」，所以原句的意思是：他是文學界的顯赫人物。
英語中關於cat的習語很多，但是比作人時，一般給人的聯想都不太好，也許是因為 cat 常和巫婆在一起，迷信認為遇到black cat是不吉利的徵兆。說一個人(as) sick as a cat是說該人「病得厲害」，尤其指「惡心想吐」；一個(as) weak as a cat的人「身體非常虛弱」；cat in the pan則是「叛徒」。
英語中常用cat指惡意傷人、包藏禍心的女人，把脾氣很壞的老太婆稱之為old cat。由cat加上後綴的catty指「愛搬弄是非的人」，而cattish的意思是「狡猾的」。表示反對或嘲笑的噓聲被稱為cat call。
英語文化中認為貓有九命（A cat has nine lives），生命力特別強；諺語A cat may look at a king的意思是「地位再低微的人也有自己的權利」。有些習語很形象，如：like a cat on hot bricks類似於漢語的「熱鍋上的螞蟻」； let the cat out of the bag是「露出馬腳」。
貓和老鼠的關系幾乎所有文化都類似。英語中的When the cat』s away the mice will play.很有點「山中無老虎，猴子稱大王」之意。動詞短語play cat and mouse with someone是像貓抓住老鼠時不馬上吃掉，而是捉住又放掉，然後又捉住那樣折騰玩弄。至於英語習語中體現的貓和狗的關系也好理解，一般不會和睦相處，live a cat and dog life是「整天吵架不和」。
大家都知道 It rains cats and dogs. 是「大雨傾盆」的意思，但是這一說法的來源至今仍有不同意見， 一說源自古代斯堪的那維亞神話：雨中巫婆騎著貓通過，而雨神乘的是一條狗。 還有一個說法：古代街道排水設施太差，一下大雨，許多貓和狗都被淹死，雨水流走後，街上滿是貓和狗的屍體。 第三個說法是該成語來自希臘文的 catape，意為「瀑布」，下瓢潑大雨時猶如瀑布，後來慢慢演變成了rain cats and dogs。
沒有自行車的魚
譯句：A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle.
解釋：沒有男人的女人就像沒有自行車的魚。完全忠實於原文，可是卻讓人一頭霧水，怎麼也想像不出來「沒有自行車的魚」是什麼意思。
首先，各種語言都有約定俗成的表達方法，比如A is like B就是一種比喻說法（這一點原譯者看出來了，譯成「就像」是對的），有時候可以直譯，如：Park to the city is like the lungs to one's body.（城市裡的公園就像人體的肺。）有時翻譯則需要靈活處理，如：Air to us is like water to fish.照字面直譯成「空氣對於我們就像水對於魚」也能看得懂，但不如意譯，譯為「（正像）魚兒離不開水（一樣），我們離不開空氣」。還有一點要注意：按照漢語習慣，比喻部分放在前面比較好。
其次，不同的語言在進行形象比喻時使用的形象（尤其是動物形象）往往不一樣，比如英語里把不同的人比喻成各種魚，漢語里就沒有。
其三，介詞常常含有動作的意思，所以without不但可以譯成「沒有」，在這一句也可以譯成「不需要」，理解起來也方便些，即將a fish without a bicycle譯為「魚不需要自行車」。
全句可以譯為：（就像）魚兒不需要/用不著自行車，女人也不（見得）需要/用得著男人。當然再進一步意譯為「魚兒沒有自行車活得很自在，女人沒有男人也可以活得很滋潤/瀟灑」 也未嘗不可。
當然這類比喻式句子還有別的句型。前面舉的關於空氣和水的比喻句可以改為下列句型：
1、Air is to us what water is to fish.
2、Air is to us what water is to fish.3、As water is to fish, so is air to us.
狗」+「怪物」如何譯？
譯句：It is a monster of a dog.
講解：英語it用得很多，基本意義是指代事物，但譯成「它」不符合漢語習慣，不如譯成「這」更好。It's a
desk.譯成「這是一張桌子」要比譯成「它是一張桌子」自然得多。
從意思上看，原譯聽上去有點怪，狗怎麼會有怪物呢？（如果翻譯時照字面直譯譯文奇怪或不通，應該自問哪裡出了問題，多數情況下恐怕是沒真正弄懂原文。）即使是某條狗真擁有怪物，那麼monster前似乎也該是定冠詞the而不是不定冠詞a。
其實，這句里的of是特殊的用法，叫「同位修飾」，即of前後的兩個成分是「同位語」，前一個是修飾後一個的，所以這句應譯成：這是一條惡魔般的狗。

3. middle finger :中指。此指居中，名正言順，且與漢語說法也一致。
