根據這個模式，閱讀首先被認為是對文本的識別,閱讀也因此被視為解碼的過程。也就是說,讀者對文本的理解是由單詞到短語、由短語到句子、由句子到語篇逐級辨認解碼，不斷進行信息組合，綜合運用一切語言數據，逐步弄懂短語、句子直至段落篇章的意義。信息處理是自下而上直線進行的，按照這個模式去理解閱讀過程。因此，這種模式沒有文本的識別也就沒有閱讀；認為影響學生理解的最主要的因素是文本；是構成文本的字母、單詞、短語、句法；認為讀者不能理解的主要原因是不能自動解碼，詞彙量缺乏，語法結構不清。
按照這個模式去理解閱讀過程，教師的主要任務就是幫助學生解決語言知識方面的問題。這是最傳統的模式。在這種模式的影響下，教師在閱讀教學中：先解詞，再解片語，然後解句，最後才通篇理解。因此，常常是把一篇文章的所有生詞和短語放在最前面來單獨進行教學。事實上，閱讀是積極主動地獲取信息的交際行為，而自下而上的模式低估了閱讀者的主動作用，沒有把閱讀者看作是信息的積極處理者。
