Emperor's New Suit

In a time that is now almost forgotten there was a great land that had an Emperor. He was a very strange Emperor indeed! He was not at all interested in conquering new lands. He was not at all interested in seeing how well his soldiers paraded up and down the street in front of his palace. He was not at all interested in music, dance or even the theater. The only thing that interested the emperor was buying and wearing new clothes. He would spend all the money that his tax collectors collected on clothes made of fine cloth.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The King's wardrobe grew as each year passed and everyone lived merrily in the capital where the King kept his clothes. One day two strangers came to the capital. One of them was very large and wore a stunning yellow suit and the other was very short and wore a very handsome green suit. Both of them had magnificent hats made of rare feathers from distant lands. They introced themselves to the most important people in the capital and told them of all the incredible creations they had made for kes and chesses, counts and countesses, princes and princesses, Kings and Queens and all sorts of very important people around the world. They even bragged that they used magic silk that would render the clothes invisible to anyone who did not have enough intelligence, ecation, and wisdom to be holding the position they did in the Kingdom.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was not long after the arrival of these two tailors that the King heard of their skills and commanded that they be brought to the palace. He thought to himself that these clothes would be the best purchase he could ever make. He thought that he might catch every indivial in a job that should not have the job. He would remove everyone who was foolish from his or her office. He called the head tax collector and told him to double the taxes and to take the money to the two tailors. He sent a message to tell them to create the finest suit ever made. The Emperor even had a studio built in the most beautiful wing of the palace and had the finest looms put at their disposal.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The two weavers were very demanding and asked for dozens of things. They did not sit still at all ring the day. They appeared to be working on the looms that the Emperor had provided and were often seen running up and down between them turning knobs and gears and yelling quite loudly at each other that all was going well.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Barely a month had passed by and the Emperor was beginning to grow anxious. He knew that it must take a fair amount of time to proce such a wonderful suit but he wanted to know if it was getting close to being finished. The Emperor was a bit nervous as he recalled the promises of the tailors. Only very wise and intelligent people would be able to see the cloth that they were weaving on the looms. Only those people that were fit for their jobs would be able to gaze upon the cloth. The Emperor thought that he didn't have anything to worry about but thought that it would be better if he sent someone in his place to see how his suit was progressing.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After a few minutes of reflection he sent a servant to find the High Minister of the palace. "He will be able to tell me how the suite looks", the Emperor spoke to himself, and "he is a very wise man and looks after all the affairs of the palace."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The High Minister went to see how the suit was progressing and entered the large room where the tailors were hard at work. He heard the looms creaking and saw them running and yelling at each other to be careful with the fabric. The High Minister rubbed his eyes and was about to say: "What have you been doing here all this time. I see nothing on your looms." Before he let the words out of his mouth he bit his tongue. He did not say a word.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The two tailors had seen the High Minister enter the room. They walked over to him and invited him to inspect the cloth and the intricate designs that they had woven. They walked between the looms pointing at the air, as there was nothing on them. "Is it possible", thought he "that I am too stupid to hold my office and that I am not as wise as I thought myself to be?" he walked beside the tailors and continued to nod his head and muttered that he had never seen such wonderful work. "It will never do", said he "that I tell anyone in the Kingdom that I couldn't even see a thread."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The patterns and designs are superb" the High Minister began "they are so intricate and lovely that the Emperor is sure to find them to be the finest in the land. I will go directly to the Emperor and tell him that your work is astonishing and that he should not be impatient as fine cloth such as this takes time to make."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"We are very happy that you appreciate our work," said the two tailors. The tailors than asked that the High Minister bring them more jewels, silk, and gold so that they could complete their designs and patters. They pointed to the empty frames and explained where each piece must be placed. The High Minister listened with great attention and tried to remember every word they said so he could repeat their words verbatim to the Emperor.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The High Minister was taking a great deal of time. The Emperor was becoming edgy and began to wonder what could be taking the High Minister so long. He sent his servant to find the captain of the guard. He appeared almost instantly, he carefully listened to the Emperor's orders, and headed off to the looms. He entered the hall and saw the two tailors pointing in the air and the High Minister scrambling behind them pointing in the same direction. The Minister caught sight of the captain of the guard and called him over. "Isn't it the most beautiful cloth you have ever laid your eyes on?" The minister began to point at the empty frame of the loom and started to describe the intricacies of the weave. "I must be unfit for my job as the Captain of the Guard," thought the captain. He looked at the empty looms and thought that he must begin praising the glorious colors or all would know that he should be removed from his post. The two tailors and the High Minister began to agree with him immediately and he sighed a deep sig. He must not tell anyone that he can't even see the color of the cloth. The two men headed back to see the Emperor and told him that the cloth was magnificent.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Emperor was now very curious to see the cloth himself. He called to a servant to have his entire entourage gathered in the main hall and that they would all go together to see the skill of his tailors. The were all chatting very loudly walking down the corridor toward the tailor's rooms and the tailors heard their approach and decided to work even harder. By the time the door were opened the tailors were running around the looms twice as fast as before. They were calling out all sorts of technical terms that very few people in the entourage even understood a word they said. Both the High Minister and the Captain of the Guard stepped in front of the entourage and pointed at the looms that stood completely empty. "Are not the designs and patterns beyond your expectation?" the High Minster called out. "Are not the colours the most glorious colours that you have ever seen. They are even more colourful than a rainbow!" the Captain of the Guard announced.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Is this possible?" the Emperor mumbled to himself. "Am I not fit to be Emperor? Am I not wise? Am I not intelligent? I can not see a thing!" The Emperor stumbled for only a second. "It is the most charming cloth I have ever seen," the Emperor spoke aloud. "It is beyond my expectations and is absolutely what I wanted." The Emperor thought that he must follow the lead of the High Minister and the Captain of the Guard. How embarrassing it was for an Emperor not to be fit for his job!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Everyone in the entourage began to make comments on every aspect of the cloth that you could imagine. "Unbelievable! Excellent! What craftsmanship! Glorious!" resounded from all sides of the room. The Emperor walked quickly across the room, took out his sword, asked the tailors to get down on their knees, and knighted them on the spot. The Emperor spoke "You are now the personal Weavers and Tailors to the Emperor." Tomorrow will be a procession to celebrate your work and I shall wear my new clothes for all to see.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next morning the two tailors came into the Emperor's changing room. They looked as if they were carrying a great number of items and moved around the furniture as if they didn't want to crease any clothes. "Here are your trousers," the short tailor said. "Here is your shirt," said the tall tailor. The Emperor stood in front of a large mirror and began undressing. The tailors began to hand him pieces of clothing and the Emperor pretended that he was getting dressed. The Emperor kept looking into the mirror and turned from side to side as if he was examining the fine way the cloth had been cut. Everyone in his entourage was proclaiming that this was the finest suit that they had ever seen.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The head of the procession came up to the Emperor and told him that everyone was ready to begin. Four young attendants were waiting at the door with a giant canopy in their hand. Two attendants would walk in front and two attendants would walk behind the Emperor to make sure he didn't get too much sun on his head. The servants of the bedchamber fell to the ground and looked as if they were picking up the corners of the train.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Emperor walked around the entire city and most of his people had come to see this wonderful new suit of cloths. Everyone yelled out that it was a most wonderful suit and the best that they had ever put their eye on. No one in the land wanted his neighbour to think him stupid or unfit for his job. A young boy who stood in front of the crowd pointed at the Emperor and in a voice louder than such a young child should have, proclaimed "The Emperor is not wearing anything at all! The Emperor is not wearing a stitch of clothing!"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Listen to the innocent child. He has nothing to gain and nothing to lose by saying such things. Slowly the word was passed from one person to the next until the Emperor heard the whispering from all the corners of the street.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Emperor was extremely vexed since his entire court had been made to look like fools. He doubled his efforts and continued with the procession. All the attendants took greater pains to hold the Emperor's train and everyone in his entourage spoke very loudly proclaiming the beauty of the Emperor's new clothes, although, in reality, everyone knew that he only wearing his birthday suit!
