Department of Water Resources officials will release Wednesday their final official statistics for Sierra precipitation levels, and all indications point to levels far below normal.

Officials said that while April was a fairly wet month for the Sierra, it brought water levels up only slightly.

"It increased statewide runoff about 5 percent, up to 60 percent (of normal)," Maurice Roos of the Department of Water Resources said. "It''s still a dry year, but at least it isn''t any worse."

Roos said that from April through July, snowmelt runoff in the Sierra is at 60 percent of normal, while water runoff is 45 percent below normal levels.

DWR snow surveys throughout the winter near Echo Summit have shown below-average accumulations, and officials say that the real impact will be felt in the summer when reservoir levels drop and conservation could be mandatory.
