这次的“考生”是科大讯飞研制的一套机器翻译系统。12月18日下午，它在不到一分钟的时间内，完成了三天前全国大学英语六级考试中的三道翻译真题，并获得了13分的平均分。

阅卷后，上海交通大学外语学院副教授纪小凌点评道，“经过评估，我们认为，当前机器翻译在大学英语六级翻译中能够准确转达原文意思，译文流畅，结构清晰，基本没有语言错误，能较好辅助不同语言的信息交流。参考往年大学英语六级考试中考生在翻译考题中的表现，当前机器翻译能够达到优秀的水平。”

现场：断网环境下，5秒内可答一道题平均得13分

本次测试在安徽省合肥师范学院逸夫教学楼B402室举行，有公证处人员在现场监督。

试题来源于12月15日刚刚结束的全国大学英语六级统一考试中的三道翻译真题（三套试卷各一题）。为确保在断网和无人工干预的情况下测评，参与测评的机器和系统于14日被封存在公证处。

大学英语六级每次考试的通过率为30%左右，三套不同的试卷中，翻译考题为一道“段落汉译英 ”，规定答题时间30分钟 ，占总分15%。

对于翻译题来说，词汇量很重要，英语六级词汇量要求达到6000个，不乏生僻词汇和短语。由于汉英间表达习惯的不同，逻辑、语序调整也十分重要。

澎湃新闻在测试现场看到，18日14时，在公证人员的见证下，监考人员启封并向机器录入考题，每道题机器翻译系统仅花费3-5秒便完成作答。导出文本后，结果交给阅卷专家评分。

14时30分，专家组开始阅卷，该专家组由上海交通大学外语学院副教授纪小凌以及翻译系讲师张菁组成。评分依据为：每道题取两位评分专家的平均分，再计算三道题的平均分。

经现场打分，评卷人纪小凌宣布：“根据大学英语六级翻译的阅卷标准，（此次机器翻译系统的）平均分达到13分（满分15分），参考往年大学英语六级考试中考生在翻译考题中的表现，当前机器翻译能够达到优秀的水平。”

纪小凌点评道：“经过评估，我们认为，当前机器翻译在大学英语六级翻译中能够准确转达原文意思，译文流畅，结构清晰，基本没有语言错误，在具体层面翻译较好，能较好辅助不同语言的信息交流。”

对于此次机器翻译的表现，纪小凌对澎湃新闻称：“超过了我的预期。有比较意外的错误，不过总体来说表现很好，（翻译的）准确性和地道性都不错”。

对于这一结果，18日，科大讯飞研究院副院长翻译技术负责人刘俊华对澎湃新闻表示，翻译系统的成绩在在意料之中，但得到的评价超过了预计。他说，“下一步，还将根据专家评估和意见，进一步完善翻译系统，可能还会挑战其他英语翻译考试。”

据科大讯飞方介绍，在参加此次评测前，其研发人员在2014年6月到2018年6月的大学英语六级26道翻译考题上进行了测试，平均分达到12.8分，与此次测试结果基本持平，“这也说明机器翻译可以稳定在高水平。”

幕后：难点在于自然语言的复杂性

随着以深度学习为代表的第三次人工智能技术的发展，机器翻译取得了长足的进步，在简单应用场景下跨过了应用门槛。

在今年5月举行的“第二届世界智能大会”上，科大讯飞股份有限公司董事长刘庆峰就曾表示，人工智能翻译英语已经达到了大学英语六级水平，下一步将实现八级水平。

对于举行此次测评的初衷，18日，刘俊华表示，大学英语六级考试是一种权威客观的衡量方式，“借助于六级中的翻译考题，我们想客观公正地给出当前以汉译英为例的机器翻译技术水平的评估，包括还存在哪些差距。一方面为后续研究提供思路，另方面也可进一步指导机器翻译技术应用。”

“但机器翻译还是很难”，他说，“主要是其处理的对象——自然语言存在复杂性。”这位研发人员介绍，自然语言是人类在社会生活中，通过不断的重复性使用而自然进化形成的沟通媒介（语言），并且在此过程中缺少规划和设计，使得语言本身就存在诸多不确定性，“同样一句话，在不同的语境中不同人就有不同的理解。”
