《东郭先生与狼》的故事出自马中锡的《东田集》，是根据古代的传说发展而成的一个寓言故事。

作者通过这个寓言，彻底揭示了狼的本性：在它遇着危险的时候，也会装做软弱可怜的样子，以迷惑那些思想糊涂的人，求得他的庇护，保全自己。危险一过，却又立刻露出吃人的本性，连救命恩人也不肯放过。

对待吃人的狼，就只能坚决、彻底地消灭它。但是东郭先生恰巧不明白这一点，他对狼也“兼爱”，表示怜悯，这些弱点正为狼所利用，结果几乎被狼吃掉了。
