But did you know that Snow White comes from Germany? It’s just one story from the 209 in Grimm’s Fairy Tales (《格林童话》). The Grimm brothers started to collect fairy tales in 1806. Their first book came out in 1812.

He knew colors and shapes. He learned about 150 English words. With his language ability, he was known as perhaps the world’s most famous talking bird.
But two weeks ago, Alex, an African Grey Parrot, died of old age. He was 31. Irene Pepperberg, a scientist at Harvard University, studied and worked with the parrot for most of its life.
In 1976, Pepperberg, a doctoral student at Harvard, bought the new-born bird from a pet shop. At that time, scientists didn’t think that any bird could learn to communicate with humans.

In experiments, Pepperberg would ask one trainer to compete (比赛) with Alex for small prizes like a grape. Alex learned to ask for the grape by watching what the trainer was doing to get it. The researchers then worked with the bird to help with pronunciation.
