They also contain the very worst parts of a society: violent crime, racial conflict, and poverty. American cities are changing, just as American society is changing.
After World War II, city residents became wealthier, more prosperous. They had more children. They needed more space. They moved out of their apartments in the city to buy their own homes. They bought houses in the suburbs, areas near a city where people live. These are areas without many offices or factories. During the 1950s the American 'dream' was to have a house in the suburb.
Now things are changing. The children of the people who left the cities in 1950s are now alts. They, unlike their parents, want to live in the cities. Many young professionals, doctors, lawyers, and executives, are moving back into the city. Many are single; others are married, but often without children. They prefer the city to the suburb because their jobs are there ; they are afraid of the fuel shortage; or they just enjoy the excitement and opportunities which the city offers. A new class is moving into the city---a wealthier, more mobile class.
Only a few years ago, people thought that the older American cities were dying. Some city residents now see a bright, new future. Others see only problems and conflicts. One thing is sure: Many dying cities are alive again.

《The Five People You Meet In Heaven》,书名被译作《死后在天堂遇见的5个人》，你可以去外文书店找一下，应该可以找到内，找不到的容话，上淘宝买，一定能买到，我看过这本书，如果做阅读练习的话，词汇量什么的，应该不算太大，差不多也就是大学英语教材的那么点词汇量吧，而且，这本书讲的故事也挺让人有感触的，不错的。

阅读小说非常利于英语学习。

但入门要选择适合自己的小说。

比如书虫系列就专很好。

如果您属英语已经达到中级，就可以阅读一些类型小说，或者畅销小说，比如harry potter对于刚开始阅读长篇小说比较适合。反过来lolita就不适合刚入门，文学性太强。

关于正确的阅读方法：
选择好一本书，然后坚持做好阅读笔记，把不认识的单词连同句子记录下来，然后隔天复习。
这是精读方法。
当积累到一定程度以后，
同水平的故事，即可进行泛读，而不用逐字查字典。
查字典是一个必经的过程，
当您觉得做了不少功课的时候，这条路就快走通了。

我是在新加坡留学三年的学生 大量的英语阅读我有很多经验
读书的时候不是每一个生词都要查专，因为每属个都查的话会读的很慢，久而久之会失去兴趣。读书情节的连贯性才是最重要的。需要查的单词仅限于重复出现，并且对于一句话的理解至关重要的单词。无关紧要的单词尽管跳过就好。读多了以后一些重复出现的单词甚至可以自己猜出它的意思，其实仔细想想会发现你知道的中文词基本上都是这样积累出来的。
如果要快速增加单词量的话，建议系统的去背barron3500，这里面有全部的常用词汇。而且要边背边穿插着看小说，这样在小说里碰到刚背过的词的几率很高。（几率非常之高，不信的话自己试试）
另外书籍的选择不能盲目，推荐看经典著作，比如1984,brave new world,oliver twist,animal farm等等。这些书看完以后收获会很大，对写作有帮助。流行著作哈利波特墓光之城什么的也可以看看。保持对看书的兴趣，随时随地拿出来看。
