5. last year at the edinburgh marathon my kenyan 阅读
题目选项 [编辑] 题干This year the marathon in my hometown took place in the hottest month. My job was to follow behind the runners to see if any of them needed medical care.
"We should stay behind the last runner, so take it slowly,” I said to the driver, Bob.
"Let's hope that the last runner is fast!” He laughed.
Soon the front runners started to disappear, and I saw a woman in a white Tshirt.
"Bob, look!”
We knew we were already watching our “last runner”.She was different from the others because of her age.
"I think she is over 60, too old for any sports match. How can she finish a marathon?"Bob said.We watched in silence as she slowly moved forward. We would move forward a little, then stop and wait for her. Then we would move a little bit more.
As I watched her try to put one foot in front of the other, I found my heart beating for her.I wanted her to stop, but at the same time, I hoped that she wouldn't.
Soon she was the only runner that we could see.Tears ran down my face. She was so great! For her, it wasn't about beating the other runners or winning something; it was about finishing what she had decided to do.
Later in my life, when I think things are too difficult, I will think of the woman—the last runner.
By the way, she did make it to the finish line that day, when the other runners and the cheering crowds had long gone home.

6. 求关于马拉松的英语文章
The marathon is a long-distance foot race with an official distance of 42.195 kilometres (26 miles and 385 yards), that is usually run as a road race. The event was instituted in commemoration of the fabled run of the Greek soldier Pheidippides, a messenger from the Battle of Marathon (the namesake of the race) to Athens. The historical accuracy of this legend is in doubt, contradicted by accounts given by Herodotus, in particular.
The marathon was one of the original modern Olympic events in 1896, though the distance did not become standardized until 1921. More than 800 major marathons are contested throughout the world each year, with the vast majority of competitors being recreational athletes. Larger marathons can have tens of thousands of participants.
7. THE ORIGINS OF THE MARATHON
The origin of the marathon begins in 490 BC, when the king of Persia sent a fleet of 25,000 soldiers to punish the Athenians for revolting. The troops landed in the coastal town of Marathon, where they were met by 10,000 armed Athenians.
The Athenians successfully battled the Persians in Marathon, but some of Persian soldiers set sail for Athens. The Athenians sent a runner (in some accounts a professional runner named Pheidippides) back to Athens to warn of the attack.
On August 12th, 490 BC the messenger ran the 42 kilometre distance without stopping. He would have been subjected to temperatures as high as 39 degrees celcius and just after he arrived in Athens with the news, he died (likely from heat stroke).
What we now know as the marathon commemorates the heroic run from Marathon to Athens.

9. 翻译英语短文Beijing marathon choked by smog

Beijing marathon choked by smog
Thousands of runners took part in the 34th Beijing International Marathon. But many of them wore face masks and were concerned about pollution.
Some athletes gave up the race because of the pollution. British runner Chas Pope said that he was only able to run 10 kilometers of the race in a mask before he was forced to pull out. He said that the race should have been cancelled because the air quality was not suitable for outdoor activities.
Chinese runner Gong Lihua, who came third in the women’s race, said the smog had caused some difficulties. “Running in this kind of smog, I felt I couldn’t sweat well and my body has been very sticky,” she said.
According to the real-time monitoring of Beijing’s environmental center, the air was severely polluted on that day. It was the most serious level on China’s air quality index and came with a warning for everyone to stay indoors and avoid outdoor activities.
However, the marathon’s organizing committee said that postponing the event would be difficult because it was impossible to change all the planning.
According to the World Health Organization, daily pollution levels should not exceed an average of 25 micrograms per cubic meter of fine particulate matter. But the peaks in Beijing reached up to 400 micrograms per cubic meter.
A Beijing resident said that although the air quality was better than last year, it was still heavily polluted. “It’s really hard to breathe when it is like this,” he said.
