An apple tree

One day, the boy returned and the tree was so excited. "Come and play with me!"The tree said.

"I don't have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter. Can you help me?"
"Sorry, but I don't have a house. But you can chop off my branches to build your house." So the boy cut all the branches of the tree and left happily.The tree was glad to see him happy but the boy never came back since then. The tree was again lonely and sad.
One hot summer day, the boy returned and the tree was delighted. "Come and play with me!" the tree said.
"I am sad and getting old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat?"
"Use my trunk to build your boat. You can sail far away and be happy." So the boy cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and never showed up for a long time.
Finally, the boy returned after he left for so many years. "Sorry, my boy. But I don't have anything for you anymore. No more apples for you ..."The tree said. "I don't have teeth to bite," the boy replied. "No more trunk for you to climb on." "I am too old for that now," the boy said. "I really can t give you anything ... the only thing left is my dying roots," the tree said with tears. "I don't need much now, just a place to rest. I am tired after all these years," the boy replied. "Good! Old tree roots is the best place to lean on and rest. Come sit down with me and rest." This is a story of everyone. The tree is our parent. When we were young, we loved to play with Mom and Dad ...When we grew up, we leave them ... only come to them when we need something or when we are in trouble. 其实语言的抄东西不是一天就可以练就的，那是一个日积月累的过程。短文有什么好处呢？一，正如你说的，单词的收获。二，是句法的熟悉。一般教材选择的短文，虽然在口语的应用方面自然不是很实用，但是对你熟悉英文的句子结构很有帮助，因为在这些文章里，句子结构都是比较规范和严谨的。 三，锻炼语感。语言的东西，说穿了就是要多看多听。大部分人在没有很好地掌握一种语言的时候，挑战长篇是很有难度的，一般都坚持不下去。短篇就不同了，就算你不认识很多单词，一样可以猜出大概的意思，所以可以完成阅读。久而久之，你就对英文有了概念。
也许你读了十几个短篇，你觉得没有大的收获。那么50个100个以后，你就会发现质的飞跃了。首先你要接受这种语言，你才能学好它。
这是我的切身体验。我曾经英文成绩很差，但是后来托福雅思都取得了非常好的成绩。我是结合多读（短文就占了很大部分，包括很多杂志上的文章），多看（这就是个很享受的过程了，多看美剧和美国电影），多写和多讲。

The Old Cat
An old woman had a cat. The cat was very old; she could not run quickly, and she could not bite, because she was so old. One day the old cat saw a mouse; she jumped and caught the mouse. But she could not bite it; so the mouse got out of her mouth and ran away, because the cat could not bite it.

Then the old woman became very angry because the cat had not killed the mouse. She began to hit the cat. The cat said, "Do not hit your old servant. I have worked for you for many years, and I would work for you still, but I am too old. Do not be unkind to the old, but remember what good work the old did when they were young."

He went on and came to a river. The river had become very big; so he could not go over it. He waited for some time; then he said, "I cannot go to the rich man's house today, for I cannot get over the river."

He began to go home. He had eaten no food that day. He began to want food. He came to the apples, and he was glad to take them out of the st and eat them.

Do not throw good things away; you may be glad to have them at some other time.

The City Mouse and the Country Mouse

Once there were two mice. They were friends. One mouse lived in the country; the other mouse lived in the city. The City mouse said, "This food is not good, and your house is not good. Why do you live in a hole in the field? You should come and live in the city. You would live in a nice house made of stone. You would have nice food to eat. You must come and see me at my house in the city."

The Country mouse went to the house of the City mouse. It was a very good house. Nice food was set ready for them to eat. But just as they began to eat they heard a great noise. The City mouse cried, " Run! Run! The cat is coming!" They ran away quickly and hid.

After some time they came out. When they came out, the Country mouse said, "I do not like living in the city. I like living in my hole in the field. For it is nicer to be poor and happy, than to be rich and afraid."

10. 如何阅读课外英语小短文

这个要看你是否看的是专业性比较强的文章，还有就是所选的文章是不是回与你现有的词汇量理答解水平什么的相匹配了。如果是的话，阅读起来相对容易一些，否则肯定是得花时间查单词的。而且有的还有修辞手法什么的运用。我们上翻译课的时候经常会有整个句子单词都认识，但是不理解句子意思的时候呢。另外，一般会选择现在网上搜索一下有没有电子版，有的话先下载下来打印，然后使用“海词”或者“金山词霸”此类的小软件开启“取词”功能，那样鼠标点到哪里就会对应的显示单词意思，用笔标注在你打印好的文稿中就行了。不过建议看第一遍的时候不要局限于先一个个单词查，最好能通览全文，把不明白的先划出来，然后才开始进行猜词和查词。还是需要一个较长的积累过程，加油啦
