Intellectual Disability
A People with intellectual disability form one of the largest single disability groups in a community. Intellectual disability refers to a general slowness to learn and function within society, and the identification of intellectual disability is usually based on an assessment of a person's performance in a variety of tests. An indivial's level of performance, as assessed, can change with time and circumstances. With skilled training and opportunity for development, people with intellectual disability have much greater potential for acquiring skills and for participation in community life than previously had been thought possible.
B In many western societies, five categories of intellectual disability have traditionally been used in order to indicate the perceived degree of difficulty an indivial has with learning. All five may occur in either children, adolescent or alt, and show as mild, moderate, severe, profound or multiple intellectual disability.
C For the majority of intellectual disabilities, there is no identifiable cause but there are some causes that are well documented. They include: brain damage at birth e to lack of oxygen--- prolonged labor ring childbirth; brain damage before birth e to factors such as rubella, drug or diet-related problems; damage after birth e to illnesses such as encephalitis or accident; hereditary defects in the genes; abnormal chromosome count resulting in, for example, Down Syndrome.
D Like everyone else, people with an intellectual disability need a rewarding job, a satisfying place to live and a good social life. But they may need extra support to achieve these things. Good support services are based on the principle of normalization---which means enabling people to be part of the community like everyone else.
E With the introction of the intellectually disabled into communities, there is a need to promote awareness of communication. Although many people may have little experience in talking with an intellectually disabled person, there are common guidelines that can simplify the interaction. Firstly, it is useful to remember that people with disabilities have feelings .Speaking in the same friendly manner as you would to anyone else is also recommended. Being prepared to wait a little longer for replies ring a conversation with an intellectually disabled person would undoubtedly benefit the exchange.

A. This park is a vast natural museum, and it is recognized as the lowest point in the U.S. All the great divisions of geological(地质的) time, the eras and most of their subdivisions, are represented(描写) in the rocks of the mountains bordering the great valley. These rocks and the land forms tell a story of endless changes in the earth's crust(地壳) - vast depositions, contortions, tilting, alternate risings and lowering, faulting and intense heats and pressures that changed the very nature of some rocks.
B. This park protects a large deposit(存放) of fossil(化石) dinosaur bones--remains of the so-called "terrible lizards" that lived millions of years ago. The dinosaurs weren't really lizards, and most of them weren't even terrible. But some of the first dinosaur fossils ever found were huge bones and teeth, very lizard-like except for their size, and so the idea of monstrous lizards was born. Today, many ideas about dinosaurs are changing, and the fossils at this park continue to help us learn more about these fascinating animals.
C. With elevations ranging from 8,000 feet in the wet, grassy valleys to 14,259 feet at the weather-ravaged top of Long's Peak, a visitor to the park has opportunities for countless breathtaking experiences and adventures. A large variety of animals will delight wildlife-watchers of all ages. Wildflower-lovers are never disappointed in June and July when the meadows and hillsides are splashed with botanical color. 359 miles of trail offer endless opportunities to hikers, backpackers and horseback riders. So far to find 60 peaks rising above 12,000 feet challenge intrepid hikers and climbers.
D. The world's largest concentration of natural stone arches is found in this park. Over 1500 of these 'miracles of nature' grace the 73,000-acre area. And it is famous for the red arches of Entrada sandstone that occur there in great profusion A 41-mile round-trip paved road in the park leads to the major sights, including Balanced Rock, Skyline Arch, and the Fiery Furnace. But there are also many other striking rock formations scattered over the park's 73,000 scenic acres.
E. Yellowstone is the oldest park in the U.S. park system and is its flagship. Visitors come to experience the park's restless geology; to see grizzlies, gray wolves, and herds of buffalo. Its turbulent(狂暴的) landscape—which remains among the most geologically active lands on the planet, with steam-spewing geysers(间歇温泉), gurgling fumaroles, and frequent earthquakes—was protected as the world's first national park in 1872. Yellowstone and the huge tracts of national-forest land that ring it comprise one of the world's last intact temperate ecosystems—all its major species of plants and animals are still present.
F. This park has a Canyon 200 miles long and about a mile deep. Along the ride you follow the Colorado River which carved this massive canyon. At times the canyon is from 5 to 15 miles across. The Colorado River continues to shape and gouge its way through the canyon where about 90 species of mammals(哺乳动物) and some 290 species of birds live. River rafting along the Colorado River has different options for people. You can go on long trips with organizations or even take a smooth ride down the river with a picnic style lunch.

One cool April 22 morning, people started the day as usual. Yet it was not a normal day. What’s so special about April 22? The answer is simple. It is Earth Day. People all over the world celebrate this important day. The idea of having a special day to celebrate Earth began in the 1960s. Life was very different then. Few people talked or even thought about the environment. Most people had no idea how dirty our air and water were.
On April 22, 1970, twenty million (百万) Americans joined the first Earth Day activities. They showed that people really did want to do something about the environment. Since then laws have been passed to protect the air, water, land, and animals.
The vehicles such as cars and buses you ride in must pass tests to make sure they don’t cause too much pollution. Thanks to this law, cars today release (排放) about half as many bad chemicals as cars did back in 1970. As a result, the air we breathe is cleaner than it once was.
Rivers and lakes are also cleaner today than they were in the 1970s. It’s a good thing because they needed a lot of help. The Cuyahoga River in Ohio was so polluted that rubbish and oil on the river even caught fire! Today, the river is cleaner. It no longer burns. It’s healthy enough for birds, fish, and other animals.
Now the celebration has spread to other countries. More than 175 countries take part each year.
In 2007, people in China paid much attention to a big problem. People were throwing away 27 million plastic bags a day! People had “Bye-Bye Throwaway Culture Week.” They wanted everyone to see how polluted it was to throw away so many plastic bags. In 2008, China passed new laws against them.
Every April 22, millions get together to clean and protect Earth. They also celebrate how far we have come. Our job is to put this knowledge to work. You can help keep our planet healthy too!

The Amazon rainforest is home to millions of different kinds of animals, plants, and birds. Most of the world’s fresh water is here and the forest plants clean the Earth’s air every day.
Chico was born near the Amazon town, Brazil, in 1944 and started working when he was very young. Like the rest of his family, the boy got the money by taking a little rubber from the trees in the forest. (The trees are not hurt when the rubber is taken.) The forest and its people lived together comfortably and peacefully.
But some people think too much about themselves and never think about the future. In 1980, the forest was burned to build roads, houses and factories. Chico was angry; he wanted to save the forest! He talked to the government workers, but they didn’t listen to him. They were still clearing the rainforests to make quick, easy money. “Many voices are stronger than one,” he thought, so Chico held group meetings. He discovered that hundreds of people agreed with him. His hope grew. More people came together to try to stop the work of the forest clearers. Large areas of the forest were saved. Later he traveled to many other countries for international help. People soon became very much interested in this brave Brazilian. In the next few years Chico’s name became famous all over the world. The government of Brazil started making plans to protect large areas of the Amazon rainforest.
But as Chico’s dreams started coming true, someone stopped him in the only possible way. The famous forest fighter was murdered right outside his home on December 22, 1988. III.
