❶ 如何选择英语分级阅读

先说结论:

  1. 这个问题没有唯一的答案(否则全世界的分级阅读就只剩下一家了);

  2. 分级阅读要从阅读的目的出发来选择(所谓OOS);

  3. 选择是要了解不同分级阅读体系的本质不同(知道苹果和梨有什么不同再来选择苹果和梨);

  4. 根据2和3来进行选择(这个的确需要一定专业知识和能力,请阅读下文或联系儿童教育专家例如我);

  5. 详细的选择需要在选择体系后使用相应的评估工具来确定学生目前的级别和如何提高(例如参加DRA和STAR考试);

  6. 级别确定以后直接去相关网站查一下你所在级别可以选择哪些书籍就可以了(可能省很多钱啊)。

下面是理由:

分级阅读从1836年的“麦加菲读本”开始,至今已经经历了接近200年的发展。发展的结果是,这个领域已经相当成熟,虽然也存在着不同的体系。不同系统虽然不同,但是没有诸如覆盖不全衔接不上之类的明显缺陷(这样的指责要么是出于商业利益打击竞争对手,要么是外行无知)。

那么,不同的分级阅读体系究竟有什么本质不同呢?

首先,分级阅读是建立在这样一个基本观点之上的:阅读能力是有差异的,这个差异可以表现为级别,而阅读能力的培养就是沿着级别的梯子逐渐攀登提高。所有的分级阅读体系都是如此。

其次,不同分级阅读体系的本质差异在于如何定义差异等级,也就是如何制定等级标准。存在着3种事实上的标准体系:客观标准、主观标准、主观客观相结合的标准。


下面介绍一下这3种标准及其实例:

  1. 客观标准的分级阅读。客观标准只考虑阅读材料文本和能力的可以客观量化的因素,例如句子长度和难度、单词难度和长度、高低频单词占比等。客观标准的优点是严谨、准确、与价值观无关,缺点是未能反映阅读能力中的主观因素。客观标准的典型实例有Lexile和AR/STAR等。

  2. 主观标准的分级阅读。主观标准考虑内容的掌握和其它不可量化的因素例如思想深度和阅读难点等。优点是考虑了阅读能力中的主观因素,缺点是模糊不清同时充满与价值观有关的价值判断,例如在中国古代阅读儒家经典但是却得出与儒家不同结论的学生会被给与很低的评估。主观标准没有独立和成熟的实例,但是我们可以把目前国内12年制教学中不同年级的分级看成是它的应用。

  3. 主观客观结合的分级阅读。主客观结合的标准同时考虑可量化客观因素和不可量化主观因素,例如考虑全文词汇数量、单词数量、高频词汇数量与比例、低频词汇数量与比例、句子长度、句子复杂度、句义明晰度、句式、印刷规格、每页词汇数、插图信息量、思想深度、主题熟悉度等。主客观结合的优点是全面考虑所有阅读能力因素,缺点是评估结果因为考虑因素过多而存在着结果与能力相关性略低的问题。典型的主客观结合实例是GRL。

了解了有关分级阅读的知识,就可以根据学习阅读的目的来进行相应选择了。为帮助大家选择,我给出如下建议:

  • 对于成年学生来说,学习目的通常是单纯提高语言水平,所以可以选择Lexile或AR这样的纯客观体系。理由是成年学生有一定判断能力同时不需要价值观洗脑。

  • 对于少儿学生来说,情况要复杂一些。如果目的是在科学指导下靠学生自己阅读而提高阅读能力,那么可以选择客观体系例如Lexile或AR;如果目的是在没有科学指导的前提下依赖于分级体系而提高阅读能力,那么建议选择主客观体系例如GRL。鉴于目前国内中小学教师和学校普遍缺乏科学的阅读教学理论(包括所谓名校),所以建议混合使用GRL体系。

  • 对于希望留学尤其是中小学阶段留学的学生,毫无疑问要选择AR。因为AR反应的就是相对于美国12年制各年级阅读水平的级别,选择AR可以直接与英语国家的中小学同步。

  • 最后,说一下选择并确定了自己的阅读级别以后如何选择阅读的书籍,这个不必拘泥于某个出版社,只要去相关网站去查一下你所在界别可以选择哪些书或文章就可以了。考虑到原版图书价值不菲,查到书以后购买国内的版本或电子书也可以。
